DAY TOUR FROM ROME TO ASSISI (car and walking tour)
We’ll pick you up from your hotel in Rome and we’ll drive you to Assisi (175 km/109 miles from Rome), a town and comune of Italy in the Umbria region, on the western flank of Monte Subasio; it was the birthplace of St. Francis, who founded the Franciscan religious order in the town in 1208, and St. Clare, the founder of the Poor Sisters, which later became the Order of Poor Clares after her death.
We will start our Assisi private tour with a visit of the Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi (St. Francis): the Franciscan monastery, il Sacro Convento, and the lower and upper church of St Francis were begun immediately after his canonization in 1228, and completed in 1253; the lower church has frescoes by the late-medieval artists Cimabue and Giotto; the upper church houses frescoes of scenes of the life of St. Francis ascribed to Giotto, and artists of the circle of Pietro Cavallini from Rome. After lunch in a typical restaurant we’ll continue our Assisi tour with a visit of the Basilica of Santa Chiara (St. Clare) with its massive lateral buttresses, rose window, and simple Gothic interior, begun in 1257, contains the tomb of the namesake saint and 13th‑century frescoes and paintings. Then we’ll continue our Assisi private tour walking by the ancient Roman Temple of Minerva facing the Piazza del Comune. Our last stop will be at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli (St. Mary of the Angels), which houses the Porziuncola: a small church from where the Franciscan movement started.
