cascata marmore

With our Marmore’s Falls and Narnia private tour we’ll show you the tallest waterfall in Europe and the ancient hilltop town of Narnia that inspired the imaginary land of Narnia, described in the works of C. S. Lewis.

We’ll pick you up from your hotel in Rome and drive you to Marmore’s Falls (110 km/68 miles North of Rome), a man-made waterfall created by the ancient Romans; its total height is 165 m (541 feet), making it one of the tallest in Italy and the tallest man-made waterfall in Europe. The first witness of the Marmore Falls in history and literature dated back to the Roman period: Virgil, in the VII book of the Aeneid; also Dante Alighieri in the song XX of the Paradise refers to the Marmore’s Falls; but it is only at the beginning of 1600 that the Falls starts to have a relevant role in the figurative culture and in the European poetic, affecting the imaginary of the poets and painters.
We’ll then continue our private tour driving to the nearby town of Narnia (Narni in modern Italian), it is an ancient hilltown and comune of Umbria, in central Italy, at an altitude of 240 m (787 ft), it overhangs a narrow gorge of the Nera River; now days appears like a well conserved Medieval town where, after lunch in a typical restaurant, we’ll visit the Cathedral, a great sample of Romanesque architecture; the Rocca, the Fortress that overlooks the city; and the magnificent Bridge of Augustus, portrayed in many works of painters of the 17th and 18th centuries.
